December 2000
Buenos Aires, Ushuaia, and Antarctica
Our excellent adventure began in Buenos Aries, Argentina. We stayed there two nights and had this view of Plaza San Martin and the train station out of our hotel window. We went on a tour of the city, saw a Tango dance, went to a Gaucho show, and visited Florida Street.
We then flew to the city known as "el fin del Mundo," Ushuaia, Argentina. It is located at the southern tip of South America. We boarded the Clipper Adventurer for a 10-day cruise of Antarctica. Here is a picture as we pull out of port.

We spent the next day and a half cruising across the Drake Passage towards Antarctica. A camera crew from CNN was on board to record the trip for their Saturday morning program "CNN Travel Now." Here they are interviewing one of the ship's Antarctica experts as we head for our first stop.
It felt good to get off the ship and step on to Elephant Island. We saw our first penguins and seals while we walked along the shoreline. Here's Lizzy on a nice sunny day in Antarctica.
Here is a picture from Cuverville Island. The icebergs were incredible and there were penguins everywhere.
That same afternoon we went ashore on Neko Island. I climbed up a small hill and took some pictures from there. Here is one of our ship sitting offshore. You can see the small boat we used to get to the island.

Lizzy and I were sitting on some rocks enjoying the scenery when these two Penguins walked up to see what Lizzy was doing. When they looked at her we thought they were wondering "who are you?"

We rode Zodiacs (small raft type boats) to shore at many other places including Port Lockroy, Paradise Bay, Deception Island, Hanna Point, and Aitcho Island. At Pendulum Bay on Deception Island I went for a dip in the thermal hot springs. The water was too hot in places and too cold in other places.

I don't know why, but people were always making fun of my hat. It kept me very warm. Maybe they were jealous!

Above is a picture of one of the Zodiacs we used to tour icebergs and wildlife up close. While cruising around Paradise Bay, I was able to get this shot of a small grounded iceberg. It was very thin on the bottom and the sun was just right.
This sunset shot was taken on our last night in Antarctica.
